We came across an instance where a Magento website we inherited from another developer had its administration panel customised to such an extent that Magento’s version number wasn’t as easily visible in the footer as it usually is.
The inability to find the version number for this website easily sprung the idea for this post: finding your Magento version number. One of the primary reasons for needing your Magento core version number is to check that extensions will be compatible with your existing store.
As above, your Magento version number should be in the footer of your administration panel by logging in to your store at yourstore.com/admin:

So, how do you find your Magento version if it’s hidden in the administration panel? Thankfully, there’s an easy way to find it:
- Navigate to System > Magento Connect > Magento Connect Manager
- Find Mage_Core_Modules in the list of modules there: the column next to this will tell you the Magento core version your website is running:
That’s it: your Magento version number should be displayed there!
